Sushi Maruyama is a lively sushi restaurant tucked into San Mateo’s Baldwin Avenue corridor where fresh, authentic Japanese seafood takes center stage. With a wide-ranging menu that rotates often, this spot caters to sushi enthusiasts who appreciate a balance of traditional nigiri and creative rolls, alongside thoughtfully curated appetizers like ankimo and chawanmushi. The kitchen’s dedication to imported fish and quality ingredients shines through dishes such as golden eyes snapper nigiri, wagyu beef tataki with house-made soy sauce, and playful touches like wagyu tacos with truffle aioli.

The atmosphere here leans toward busy but energetic, with locals often flocking for the omakase experience — which offers solid value without skimping on the variety of seafood. Reservations are highly recommended since the dining room fills up quickly, reflecting the steady demand for skillfully prepared sushi on the Peninsula. Expect some hustle from the staff during peak times, which speaks to the spot’s popularity but isn’t unfriendly or chaotic.

This place suits visitors who want a deep dive into Japanese flavors beyond the typical rolls, such as fatty tuna sashimi and rare bites like sea urchin or bluefin tuna paired with subtle accents like black truffle balsamic soy. The mix of intimate table seating and a sushi bar allows diners to choose their preferred experience — casual socializing or a focused meal at the chef’s counter, where the freshest catches and seasonal specials come alive.

Practical touches, like baskets under the table for personal items, reveal the care taken to enhance comfort despite the bustling setting. Sushi Maruyama is best for those looking to savor fresh, nuanced sushi without the formality of higher-end omakase joints, making it a favorite among locals who keep returning for both the price point and quality.

Amazing spot!! Very affordable and fresh omakase with a huge selection of seafood. The menu is always changing but I loooved the ankimo and barracuda here, which are rarer dishes to find in the US. It’s always packed so make sure you make a reservation ahead of time.

Had omakase set at the table. Loved the scallop/uni, toro, yellowtail, and the castella. Super yummy. We also had the tofu which was very creamy and interesting, but not to my taste. Takowasa was addicting. My parents really liked the king salmon hand roll. Good service. I appreciate they give baskets to put your purse under the table. I would like to come back and sit at the bar for omakase next time, and try more uni!

This place has very authentic sushi. Imported Japanese fish are fresh and flavorful. The other appetizers and rolls are excellent too. The only negative is they are very busy so our dinner felt a bit rushed. But if you are looking for good food, this place is one of the best Japanese restaurants on the peninsula.

I called & left a message early Sunday asking for a same day reservation. they called me back & got a reservation for 8:30p. we drove an 1hr to try this place out. 8pc Omakase for $54 just seemed like a great deal. it's really good, we also had blue fin sashimi with black truffle, fried scallop with black truffle, wagyu tacos with truffle aioli, hamachi kama, uni, blue fin o-toro handroll. everything was amazing. they also gave my daughter a complimentary dessert. it's a small place that seats maybe 30 people. reservations are recommend. out of evening we ordered id highly recommend the omakase, wagyu tacos, o-toro handroll.

The food were good. I tried the extra fatty tuna and that was great, melt in your mouth. Unfort6they don't have fatty salmon. I was only able to try mostly a piece of each of the sashimi because I would have ordered $200 worth of fish myself if I ordered enough for myself. Overall, I would recommend this place if you're not that hungry.

The Omakase is always great there, my favorite from the 8 course was the anago. They always update the menu based on seasonal availability of the fish, so its very good. It’s more of an eclectic style of sushi but still enjoyable if that is your style. We also had these fried greeneyed fishes that were stellar. They were incredibly well seasoned and perfectly crispy. The wagyu-tacos are also a must get everytime I go. I got a snow crab handroll that wasn’t quite what I expected but the salmon truffle handroll is amazing. We got the green tea ice cream for dessert and they also gave us a yuzu cheesecake that was delicious. It somehow tasted like passionfruit and yuzu. I’d go back again for that cheesecake!
